Reimagining inclusive education: Honest thinking for meaningful change

My Research

My research focuses on inclusive education, which I believe is the foundation of a fair and socially just society. Inclusion is a broad and complex field, and while I often specialise in Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND), my work is not limited to this area.

At the heart of my research is a commitment to making hidden voices heard. I use methods that are inclusive, accessible, and creative, always adapting my approach so that no one is excluded from taking part.

Inclusions not inclusion: 6 versions of inclusive education

My key research found that students and teachers understand and experience inclusion in the classroom in many different ways.

In fact, there are six versions of inclusion that often show up in the classroom.

Each of these versions can be interpreted in different ways, and they often overlap or even conflict with one another. This shows that inclusive education is not simple — it’s a complex, multi-layered concept full of dilemmas and contradictions. But this complexity is actually useful: when we’re honest about the challenges of inclusion, we can also become more creative and innovative in finding solutions.

I believe research is at its best when it’s collaborative. I welcome opportunities to work with others on studies and to publish across academic and practice-based fields.
